Mediterranean Cottage

Our clients are passionate about design and eager to embrace change. Over the past 25 years, we’ve periodically updated materials, textiles, and colors in their Northern California villa. The living room ceiling was dark redwood at the project start. After observing light conditions throughout the seasons, we stained it a warm gray. In the kitchen, we hand-waxed 100-year-old terracotta tiles and laid them like bricks on the floor, and we set grout-less Italian Farnese tiles into the backsplash. Both sets of tile carry historic details that imbue the country kitchen with the Mediterranean feeling our clients relish. In need of more kitchen counter space, we coordinated with an architect who built a cutting board that rolls out of a cabinet.
